SHINee Odd Album Review

SHINee's back and this album is dang good.

That was a solid English introduction by Key. I already have high hopes for this album and the first song Odd Eye just makes my hopes higher. All the singing and the raps are on point and blend very well which is something that SHINee has definitely refined over the years. The chorus is also beautiful with the sexy synths and floating falsettos.

Liebster Award Nomination

Since this blog is a little baby blog, one of my favorite things is when I get a comment. It means that whether on accident or on purpose, someone saw something of interest and not only that, but they took a moment out of their day to say that they liked something. It always gives me the warm fuzzies and makes me want to send out internet love to those people. Now, to make things even better there is something called the Liebster Award that helps small blogs gain more attention which I think is a lovely thought. We could all use new internet friends.

I have been nominated by the blog IKurate who compile recaps, first impressions, and reviews of different dramas. This is something I am always in need of when I am writing something about a drama and I am missing a picture that I want. Thank you recappers who are better at taking screen shots than I am! I also really like their blog lay put. It's easy use and it's pretty. What more could a person want?

Jonghyun The First Mini Album 'BASE' Review

I'm going to be honest and say that "Deja-Boo" bothers me. I know that in Korean it would be romanized as 'boo' but that doesn't mean that that is the correct way that it is spelled. I just needed to get that off my chest, now we can move on to the actual review.

I am going to start this in the same way that I started the music video review

Dang.

Is album is totally what I expected from Jonghyun, except maybe I thought there would be something a little more up beat but that could just be my inner SHINee fan talking. It probably is. Jonghyun is SHINee but SHINee is not Jonghyun and that can be said for every single member.

Jonghyun Crazy (Guilty Pleasure) MV Review

I have two things to say:

1) Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaang
2) The uncloseable adds are back! Curse you SM! I don't care about your weird virtual whatever that is!

According to the Youtube comments section, there seems to be a lot of grumpy people, not that I am surprised at all. Grumpy people seem to run rampant in the K-pop world. I guess people didn't like this song as much as they thought they would and to those people I say, are you kidding me? I think the song choice is kind of obvious because Jonghyun is a R&B kind of guy. What a person does in a group is not always reflective of what they want to do as an individual. Duh.

Onew - Dream Girl Doll

If I didn't like the finished product of the "Lucifer" Onew doll, I freaking love the "Dream Girl" Onew doll. Murphy commissioned me to make this for her friend who was graduating from college. It makes me feel cool to say I was commissioned to do something.

I had to pump this doll out though. I was working on him right up until I left and Murphy didn't even pick him up until after I had been in Korea for a while.

This guy is my new masterpiece I think. My other masterpiece dolls involved a lot of finger work and small pieces but this is a masterpiece in painting. I painted on his shirt and I painted the entire jacket which was both parts painful and fun. I also really enjoyed making the tie. Since it was a checkered pattern, I had to cut out tiny pieces of felt and glue them on to a tie shape. It went pretty well as long as I didn't breathe too hard. I learned that the hard way.

Another little detail that you can't see is that his pants are a little short and he has little turquoise socks. They're pretty adorable.

Onew - Lucifer Doll

It hit me the other day that I completely forgot to put up some pictures of dolls that I made before I came to Korea. It makes me a little sad to post this and the one coming after because they will be the last ones that get posted for a while. I miss making dolls. *cries quietly*

I have been making a set of SHINee dolls from the "Lucifer" era and this Onew doll was the last one that I was able to do. Someday they will be completed with Jonghyun, but who knows when the heck that is going to happen.

Onew actually took a really long time because I started him as a project to keep me occupied as I took the train from Utah to California, and then I didn't work on him for a long time. He obviously got finished though, and maybe it's because I wasn't super interested in this doll, but I'm not in love with it, especially his hair which I realize looks slightly tragic in this picture, but there is nothing to be done about that.

My favorite part about the Onew doll, aside from the fact that he has a furry vest like Key that you can't see, is that the bottom oh his shirt has fringe. That was an experience. I cut out a strip of felt and then make little cuts all around it for fringe and then glued it to the base of the shirt. So yeah, there is one piece of glory on the doll.

K-pop Blondies, the Good and the Bad

Blonde hair, it can either be the most amazing thing that can happen to an idol's head or it could make you want to throw liberal amounts of hair dye at them in the hopes that they will use it to change their hair back to an acceptable color.

Not too long ago on Allkpop there was an article about a writer's favorite blonde haired idols which got me thinking, who are my favorite blonde idols? And then, more importantly, who are the people who should never, ever, be blonde again (and if it does happen, their stylist should be shot)?

The Good

Gongchan - Beautiful Target Japanese Version

Gongchan isn't my favorite member of B1A4, that goes to CNU, but I still really like him. He has grown into his face recently and he has a really versatile look. One minute he can be the cutest thing ever and the next he's got his smolder on and looking all mature and jailbate-y. Is he still jailbate? I don't actually know and I don't care enough to look it up. I don't think he is.........

Hyuk - Hyde

Blonde Hyuk, was the best Hyuk. His blonde was really complimentary to his skin tone so it didn't wash him out like some other people who will be on the bad list. I think that Hyde was also the time that Hyuk started to look more adult like than in previous videos. The baby's growing up and he is doing it well.

Sungmin - Sexy Free and Single

There have been quite a few blondies in Super Junior but my favorite bottle blond in Sungmin. Yes, even with my great love for Heechul and Enhyuk who have also been blonde Sungmin pulls it off the best. I think that it is because Sungmin is already adorable and the blonde adds to that cute innocence that seems to follow him everywhere.

Dara - Falling in Love

Everyone here knows that Dara is a goddess right? Good. I know that CL is the blonde of the group and she looks mighty fine with her honey hair but Dara looked amazing in this video. Her blonde hair with that white dress and gold jewelry was stunning. She was glowing and I could probably go on but I'll save everyone from that embarrassment and stop here.

PO - Nillili Mambo

Like Dara, P.O. is not the blonde of the group, that title would normally go to Zico and while I like Zico's blonde hair, I like it better when he has more of a chocolate color like in "Tell Them", post dreads. His hair was so fluffy and beautiful then. I do kind of miss the dreads though, he rocked them. I loved P.O.'s long blonde hair during this era though, even when he had it down, kind of. That middle part was questionable, but then again what middle part isn't questionable?

The Bad

Kyuhyun - Don't Don

"Don't Don" was a dark time for Kyuhyun. First, he almost dies in that horrible car accident and is unable to promote with the rest of the group and then to add insult to injury SM poured a bottle bleach on his head. This hair is too light for his face and there are artistic dark roots to go along with the song's J-rock concept. I really liked this song, but I do not like what it did to Kyuhyun's hair.

Taemin - Lucifer Japanese Version

Yes, I am aware that this isn't a flattering picture of Taemin, but I feel that if you need makeup and lighting in order for you hair to work with your face, something is wrong with that. His hair and his face are similar colors and it is making him look sick and gaunt. Taemin can look good with light hair but it needs to be a brown or red blonde. No more single tone light blondes on Taemin's head SM!

Gain - Bloom

I wouldn't say this was bad in the same sense that Taemin is bad, but Gain definitely doesn't have the same appeal when she is blonde. In "Bloom" she was going for a more innocent look and it matched all the pastels in the video, but for me Gain should always be black. She is this powerful woman that pushes the boundaries that are set around her and I don't feel like she can do that with blonde hair.

Jaehyo - Jackpot

Luckily for the actually video he had silver/grey hair which I did like, but during the "5 Minutes Before Chaos" promotions he had this super weird blonde hair going on. It was also styled quite terriblely in one of the teasers too which made it look even worse.

And there you have it people who rock a blonde head and those who do not. I can think of quite a few others who I like blonde or with white hair but not as many who I don't like, what do you think?

K-pop End of the Year Show 2013 Comebacks

Another year has ended and this later half has been just as busy as the beginning. Some people are making their millionth comeback of the year and others are making comebacks after what feels like a painful amount of time. For the half time show back in July, I chose songs I liked whether I had already reviewed them or not, and at the end I felt like I had become rather redundant, so I'm going to just stick with the artists that I liked but didn't review this time around.

I'm going to only slightly contradict myself now and mention B1A4's "What's Going On?", Block B's "Very Good", and VIXX's "VooDoo Doll" because they all won their first award with these songs and I have a great love for all of these groups. It was even better because they were all up against really big groups so the wins were that much more incredible. The only thing that would have made this better is if U-KISS had won something for "She's Mine" because seriously, why can't those guys catch a break, they're awesome.

Debuts            Solos and Sub units            K-pop Half Time Show 2013

Comebacks

Girls

Tiny-G "Miss You"

When I first heard this song, I didn't really like it. I felt that it was too repetitive and I was still grooving to "Minimanimo" because, let's be honest, that song is awesome. I think what threw me was how different this song was from "Minimanimo" and I obviously wasn't ready for that. This song has a more mature and sexy feel to the candy colored before mentioned song. They also kept it in the realm of classy/cute sexy and there can always be more of that and less of the overt sexy that was the trend this year.

Miss A "Hush"

Whenever I think of this song all that comes to mind is jji jji party, Block B what have you done to me? It's also recently been ruined again since Min got punched by a back up dancer during a performance. I'm not a huge fan of Miss A but I do like that they have a powerful image. I was really impressed with this song because it did have a different sound than usual since it wasn't written by JYP and I wouldn't be opposed to them continuing with this sound for a while, nothing against JYP. The video was also interesting and kind of creepy. All the head shots of them singing and staring into the camera was so haunting looking and then at the end when their faces changed from one to the other was a cool effect.

SPICA "Tonight"

This is one of the videos and songs that grabbed me the moment that I hit the play button. I didn't really know anything about SPICA before this song, and I still don't, but they have song amazing vocals. This song is so fun and the video represents that too. The whimsy in the video and the bohemian style of the shoot fit perfectly with the song. The video also seems really candid even with all the obviously staged parts of it. These girls look like they are genuinely having fun during this shoot and seeing this I hope that they can get some more followers in the future.

Rookies

Ladies Code "Pretty Pretty"

Ladies Code debuted in March 2013 with the song "Bad Girl", because everybody this year was a bad boy or bad girl of some sort it seemed like. This was their comeback song and I think that I like it a little more than their debut song. I'm still not totally sure how I feel about them but they have killer vocals and they have a definite style. I am looking forward for what they put out in the future.

GI "Gi Yeuk"

So, I'm kind of in love with these girls. I'm also glad that they put out a MV for this song because I like it better than "Don't Lie". This song has a really cool Bollywood sound and that isn't something that you hear everyday. GI is also a group that you don't see everyday. I like that in their videos they are dancing and wearing baggy clothing and looking fierce rather than being super aegyo and sexy because there is more than enough of that going around.

Boys

MIB "Master"

This is one of those songs that within the first ten seconds of hearing it, I went to iTunes and bought it. I think that the reason that I liked it so much it because it has such a smooth sound. This song also came out about the same time that Kangnam made a cameo on I Hear Your Voice as the guy who stole Soo Ha's bag, so when I watched the video I had the "why do I know you?" dilemma. They have also put out another video which I didn't love right off the bat like this one, but now, I also love their new song. What I don't love is Sims little goatee thing. It's kind of creepy and it makes his chin looks dirty.

SHINee "Everybody"

When I first heard this song I was a little underwhelmed because it was so dubstepy.......no wait, it's actually compextro. Yeah, whatever. I have come to love it though. It is a fun song and SHINee hasn't done anything that sounds like this before. This was predominately a dance video though, let's be honest, that dance was freaking amazing and Taemin is a beast. Anyone who says otherwise is a liar.

Drunken Tiger "The Cure"

Okay, so technically this is a solo thing, but Yoon Mi Rae and Bizzy are in it, so I am making the executive decision to put it here. Tiger JK is one of those people that I only occasionally listen to since he is a rapper and I have never been one to listen to rap, this song is fantastic though. Even though it is a rap song, it has a melody line since Yoon Mi Rae is in it and instead of a "normal" rap beat, it has a reggae feel to it. This is one of those songs that makes you feel good while you are listening to it, and then it sticks with you as you go on with your day.

Rookies

Airplane "Give Me a Chance"

I'm so glad that these guys are finally back because I fell in love with them when they debuted earlier this year with "You Are Pretty". Something that I mentioned about them before is that since they are a trio, I can hear all the members and they are have a sound that is their own. I don't know their names, but I think that I am in love with the member that sings the "kajima~" part. It's so clear and wonderful and I always have to sing along at that part too. I say that anyone who doesn't also jam to that part as well is a liar, because how can you not?

24K "U R So Cute"

When I heard this song in July, I really liked it, but I didn't take the time to actually look into this group because if I looked into every group that I thought was interesting, I wouldn't get anything done, ever. While going back over the things I liked I found this one again and looked into the group more. They debuted as 4K and then added two more creating 24K and I think that it is pretty safe to say that I am hooked.

Happy Kpop Halloween!

Break out the costumes and candy because today is Halloween! I have always loved Halloween, not to be scared, because I hate that, but for the costume element of it. I think that dressing up is so fun, but it isn't something that you can do on a regular basis without getting a few weird looks. I sometimes say that if I had enough pencil skirts that I could rule the world and I would wear them all the time if it weren't so impractical. Granted, that is different than full blow costumes, but I would also rock a bustle if they were readily available, so there you go.

In K-pop there is a lot of dressing up whether it be for music videos or public appearances, but it always fun to see how far these people can push that envelop. Sometimes it can be pushed a little too far, but that is what fans love, seeing their idols dressed in ridiculous clothing or having crazy concepts.

I often wonder what these groups (mostly boys) think when they are told about the newest concept for their group, whether it be for an actual album or just for a side project, because side projects can result in dressing like girls or vegetables.

So in honor of Halloween, I give you some of the best costumes that I could think of. I probably am missing some because there are so many groups out there, but these are the ones that I liked.

Word of the Day: Noona Slayer

Noona Slayer n. 1. A younger man pursuing a romantic relationship with a significantly older woman. 2. The Korean male counterpart to the American female "cougar." ex. I didn't think I'd like Lee Min Ho as a noona slayer, but I did.

Here in the US, pop media has been obsessed and scandalized with the idea of "cougars," an older woman pursuing a much younger man. But for Korean pop media, it's the much younger man who is pursuing the older woman. Hence the origin of "noona slayers." These different terms seem like opposite sides of the same coin, but "noona slayer" infers that the relationship is male initiated while "cougar" implies that it is female initiated. Probably the biggest difference is that in western society, cougars are still considered slightly scandalous but no one bats an eye when Korean dramas cast younger men with older women. That is, unless the guy is very young, in which case the actress is then considered a pedo-noona. Now for the fun part.

My List of Top 10 Korean Noona Slayers!

1. The Telepathic Noona Slayer. Since I Hear Your Voice is ending this week, I'm listing them first. Lee Bo Young is 10 1/2 years older than Lee Jong Suk.

Noona Slayer Rule # 7- The age difference goes away completely when you are both dressed like high school students

 2. The Time Traveling Noona Slayer. Lee Min Ho and Kim Hee Sun in Faith have a whopping 10 year age difference. It's weird at first, but I promise, after episode 13 or 14 you totally forget about it.

Kim Hee Sun, how do you not run your fingers through Lee Min Ho's hair all day long? Also, how do you keep your hear so shiny and perfectly made up in ancient times?

3. The Most Adorable Noona Slayer Ever. Yoon Shi Yoon. How can you not melt when this boy smiles? You can't. It's impossible, even for this very uptight police woman, Lee Ji Ah, in Me too, Flower! ( which is the worst name ever for a K-drama). But, more importantly she is 111/2 years older than he is.

She started her period while he was still in diapers.

4.The 'My Baby Needs a Mama' Noona Slayer. In Oh My Lady, Choi Siwon discovers that he has the most adorable daughter (Yoon Shi Yoon level adorable). So what does he do? He falls in love with Park Chae Rim, the nanny.

Park Chae Rim, you could also be Siwon's nanny since you are 9 years older than him.

5. The Body Switching Noona Slayer.Ok, so Lee Min Jung fell in love with little Shin Won Ho, who is almost 10 years younger than her in Big.

You can't blame her cause most of the time he looks like Tom Hanks... oops I meant Gong Yoo. Sorry, I've haven't seen it yet.

6. The 'So What if You have 6 Months to Live!' Noona Slayer. If your dying wish is to fall in love with a crazy hot guy, may I recommend Lee Dong Wook who was 6 years younger than his Scent of a Woman costar, Kim Sun Ah.

Yes, please protect her face from premature aging. You know what, protect it from regular aging as well.

7. The Dating Contract Noona Slayer. If you didn't want to fall in love, you shouldn't have written a contract to be in a fake relationship. Everyone knows that! Unfortunately Hyun Bin and Kim Sun Ah found that out the hard way in My Lovely Sam-Soon
What is 7 years or 15 pounds when you really love someone?

 8. The Student-Teacher Noona Slayer.  Okay, so Lee Chung Ah opened the door originally in Flower Boy Ramyun Shop by mistaking his age and calling him oppa, but Jung Il Woo happily ran through that door to win her heart. Funny that this drama, more than any other that I've mentioned is specifically about  noona slaying, but Lee Chung Ah is actually only 3 years older than him.

Your babies would be so attractive, they would come with a warning label.

9.The Original Gangster Noona Slayers. The opening lyrics of SHINee's debut song  literally begins, "Noona you are so pretty." After 5 years of honing their skills, they are the most practiced and professional noona slayers on the list. I love them so much.

Slaying noonas since 2008.

 10. Real Life Attempted Noona Slaying Fail. I saw this in the news recently and I had to include it. You remember Ah Sun Young from Dream High? She played Mr. Kang's alcoholic sister. Well, in Dream high she was a bit of a cougar... at least in her imagination.

Well it turns out that she was recently approached by a real life noona slayer. According to her, he was a male idol 12 years younger than her that bragged about how he was going to win her over. Apparently he was very persistent and she had a really hard time shaking him loose. Check it out.

Now it's your turn. Leave a comment and tell me which noona slayers I missed.

Minho

I have already done a Minho doll so I won't introduce him again.

This version on Minho is from the Etude House CFs that SHINee did with 2NE1's Dara. I had a lot of fun making him, especially the jacket and the shoes. All of the zipper details were hard, but things like that are my favorite part about making these dolls. If I'm not doing things that force me to hold my breath as I glue and create, it's not exciting enough!

The crowning glory of this doll are definitely the shoes. Cutting all the pieces to fit around the shoe and making both shoes look the same was a trial, but it was fun. The shoelaces were probably the hardest part because I have to shape them, and then they didn't want to stay on. Obviously they did though, and I am totally happy with what I have done.

This doll was commissioned by one of the F4Plus1 members for a firend.

Taemin

Taemin is a member of the Korean boy group SHINee. He is a singer, dancer, and the maknae of the group. His status of the maknae kind of automatically makes him the cute one, but lately he has become TaeMAN, so let's see how long SM allows this concept to go on.

I made this doll this past week because I haven't really been working. School is over and I don't have a schedule at the pool I'm starting to work for. I only worked last Monday, so by Thursday I was starting to get the crazies. Making dolls is the perfect way to keep the crazies at bay because it takes up all your time to make one of these if you let it, and I did. I pumped this guy out in about two days.

The only snag that I ran into with Taemin is his vest. I was watching the "Lucifer" music video to try to get a picture of his necklace when I noticed something, the entire back of his vest was mesh. So, after I cried and swore, I tore out the back of his vest and created the mesh pattern that you can kind of see in the bottom picture.

All I have left of the SHINee "Lucifer" collection is Jonghyun and Onew and the question "what the heck am I going to do with these five when I'm done?" still gnaws at me, but oh well, it's fun.

Minho

Minho is a member of the Korean idol group SHINee. He is the rapper and the resident sports freak. He also may be the least person inclined to do aegyo in the group. For this reason Key (who is a master aegyo-er) likes to do aegyo around him to make him uncomfortable and it is hilarious.

I made this doll a few months after making the Key doll, again from boredom. I also made him because I thought that it might be fun to make an entire K-pop group someday. I only have three more for SHINee and I don't know when they will be made. The problem with this is what to do with them when I am done. I already have three other dolls, excluding Key, that are sitting around.

I had fun making him because I got to use fabric dye for the first time. He is suppose to have a metallic jacket, unfortunately felt does not come in metallic. It made it kind of hard to work with, but it was fun. I also put lines on his shin guards and that was a mess. There was sparkly paint everywhere, including on my phone. I also gave him shoelaces which was a fun touch. Overall, I am happy with him.

SHINee - Why So Serious?

How's the song?

I wonder if Minho is sad that he can't say "SHINee's back" at the beginning of this video. Since SHINee has been back since last month he only gets to say "SHINee". It feels kind of empty, but I am glad that they are back again.

I actually really liked this song. It makes me feel a little bad to say that though since Jonghyun isn't in it. That just leads me to think, how much more amazing will this song be when Jonghyun comes back to wail and ad-lib in the background like we all expect him to.

We miss you!
I haven't listened to all of SHINee's stuff so maybe I'm wrong about this, but this song seems really different from their other songs. It is edgier and I like it. They have all of a sudden become rock stars or something.

There needs to be more of this type of sound in K-pop I think. JaeJoong did it in "Mine" and Super Junior did it once upon a time with "Don't Don" and I love it. Those two songs were definitely more rock than this pop rock sound, but it's nice to hear groups starting to branch out a bit.

How's the video?

This video is a typical SHINee dance video. There isn't really a plot though, so I've decided to create my own. Here we go:

SHINee has been trapped at the top of a tower for a number of years. Jonghyun was able to escape and said that he would come back for them, but never did. One day a girl finds the entrance to the tower.

SHINee doesn't know what to do when the girl opens the door. Onew is immediately smitten though as everyone else stands dumfounded.

What is that thing?
Onew tries to woo the new girl but gets book blocked by Key, and all the other members for that matter.

Stupid uncloseable adds
All the boys finally decide that to protect their friendship, the girl will belong to all of them and they will just keep her as a pet.

Taemin likes this idea
As they are celebrating, a cop that guards the tower knocks on the door. Luckily he goes away before they are found out.

Anyone home?
The cop turns around though because he thinks that he hears something. When he looks in the window all he sees is a girl dancing by herself. Little does he know she is actually a zombie and has consumed them

They tasted so good I have to dance
 The End

Yeah, that's totally what happened. As for the zombie part, read the lyrics and tell me they are not all zombies. Also, what is that pink drippy stuff on the title of the song? Think about it.....

Was the dance super amazing?

I wouldn't say super amazing just because I know SHINee is capable of more; this was cool, but they have had better ones. I would say that SHINee's best dances are "Sherlock" and "Lucifer". This dance doesn't look as daunting as those other ones, but it is still very fun.

There is a lot of jumping and hip moving here and you can see that they guys are enjoying themselves as they perform. They don't have super serious faces like when they do some other dances that are sexy and complex.

Which member owned it?

This was definitely Taemin's video. I feel like he was singing his parts and Jonghyun's parts because he was everywhere. Not that I'm complaining, he was just in it a lot. Things like this do make me wonder what will happen when Jonghyun comes back though. Who is singing whose lines and where is everyone going to stand when there is one more body on the stage?

Good job Taemin!
How is the styling?

The styling is really crisp in this video. There are no flowers or pastel pants and Taemin isn't dressed in women's clothing. There were four costume changes:

Key              Minho                  Onew            Taemin
All the outfits are very clean and there aren't a pair of pencil pants in sight. When the boys came out in the blue suits it made me wonder if it was some kind of homage to the fact that Minho and Key went to England for SHINee's One Fine Day. That show was amazing.

I also really like the leather jackets they wear in their individual shots. I think my favorite one is Key. He's such a little diva.

Does the English make your ears bleed?

There is not a lot of English in the song aside from the 'why so serious' which I love. It all sounds good too. Good job SHINee.

Should you buy the song?

I haven't bought it yet, but I am definitely considering it. Like I said, you can tell Jonghyun is missing, but it is just such an awesome sounding song!
